Glossopdale Churches and Chapels

Unitarian Church, Fitzalan Street, Glossop.

in 1874 for a lease of £1 360 square yards of land in Fitzalan Street was obtained from Lord Howard and on the 12th June 1875 a two storied building was opened which was a gift of Edmond Potter Esq. of Dinting. The first Minister was Rev. Frederick Ashton who served the congregation until 1878 and was succeeded by Rev. W. Harrison until 1888.
Unitarian  Church, Glossop During the tenure of the Rev. R. M. Lambley who became Minister in 1890 it was decided to build a new Church and the old building was demolished. The foundation stone for the new Church was laid on 27th April 1895 by Lady Roscoe,Captain E. Partington, George H. Leigh and Herbert Partington. The Church was designed by Mr. J. Lindley-Hyde and constructed by S. Robinson & Son of Hyde. It cost £3,500 and had seating for nearly 400 people.
Unitarian  Church, Glossop A five light stained glass window at the east end of the Church by Swaine, Bourne & Son was given by Captain Partington. A tablet on the wall near the pulpit was also given by Captain Partington in memory of the Rev. Frederick Ashton. Unitarian  Church, Glossop The interior decoration of the Church was a cream colour with moldings over windows and arches, the chancel walls and organ chamber were in a light rose colour.work was carried out by Dutton & Sons, Glossop.A Norman Beard organ was installed in December 1910 and on 13th June 1925 Mrs. Herbert Partington presented a carved oak reredos to the Church in memory of her husband.
The font was in memory of Lord Doverdale.
The building is still in situ today although it is now a private residence.
