Glossop & the Nab
What is the Heritage Centre all about?
The Heritage Centre has been created by local enthusiasts drawn from the town's many voluntary organisations who wish to share the pleasures and interests of the town and surrounding countryside with a wider public. The Centre shows the way in which the town, its setting and its people have developed in the known ten thousand years of its history, so that both residents and visitors are encouraged to gain a better understanding of its unique character and tradition, which in turn should lead to a greater concern for its future.
What has the Heritage Centre got?
Maps & Plans, Information sheets & booklets, selection of old local photographs, old local newspapers back to 1880's,
local souvenirs, books and our own exclusive local photographic greeting cards for sale.
Art Gallery
Our recently refurbished Art Gallery houses a large collection of original paintings & prints offered by local artists for sale.
Admission to the Gallery is Free.
Exhibitions
The permanent exhibition illustrates the area's past, from pre-history to the twentieth century, emphasising the strong influence on the town's economic and social structure made by the Dukes of Norfolk and the Victorian mill-owners. The exhibition features an authentic Victorian Kitchen and numerous historical costumes. Regularly changing exhibitions are also held, usually illustrating specific aspects of the town's development and local subjects of general interest - natural history, arts and crafts, sporting activities, schools, family history, local history and the influence of the railways.

Local History Resources
Over the years that the Heritage Centre has been open it has amassed a large archive of interesting documents regarding the town's history. All of the archives are available for reference use at the Centre.
Family History Resources
More recently the Heritage Centre has received an increasing number of enquiries and requests from people researching their ancestry in the town. We have assorted microfiche for researchers to use including trade directories, census returns, probate records, monumental & memorial inscriptions. We have the 1881 British Census & National Index and also the Vital Records Index for the British Isles on CD Rom. Numerous helpful lists & indexes for local censuses.
