Census Returns - Available to view online, these are a detailed record of almost everyone in the country on census night. Information on all individuals in the household can be discovered. The first census useful to family historians is the 1841, and then every 10 years with the latest available being 1911, as census records are closed for 100 years. |

Parish Registers - These provide information on baptisms, marriages and burials prior to the start of civil registration in 1837 but few survive before 1600. In 1812 separate printed registers were introduced for each event. Parish Registers can be quite difficult to track down. Some are available online, at local studies libraries or County Record Offices. Some may still be retained by the church.
